They are used in celebrity and popular culture, because it is a very easy and effective way to either get a message to a large number of people quickly, or to promote something.
Big brands of course utilize a slogan, and many use them on their products and in this case t-shirts. We probably have all heard of the slogan Just Do It which is a trademark of Nike, you can buy all sorts of clothing which sports this slogan. Even Paris Hilton tried to get in on the act, with her show she kept on saying the words "That's Hot" and later tried to trademark it.
