T-Shirt History

T Shirts have came a long way over the years. Back in the 19th Century they were created and used as undergarments worn by the navy under their uniform. They had the same characteristics which are in use today; Round neck, no buttons and short sleeves. Obviously the Tee as its also known got its name from the shape of the garment, a T. They were also popular because they are were and still are relatively inexpensive.

Fast forward to today and they are a part of life, a part of fashion, and are used creatively, not hidden away under clothing, but they are the clothing. As fashion moves so do t-shirts, we have seen a change in style over the past 50 or so years, since they became worn in popular culture.

Tie Dye T Shirts

Tie Dying became very popular in the 60s and 70s, especially in the hippy culture. it was popularized in music, from influences such as Janis Joplin. It is quite a simple process, and as it sounds, you tie your t-shirt up. To tie-dye your t-shirt you fold it up into a desired pattern, then tie it with string or elastic bands. The dye is then applied to the material which you want to be dyed, and the tying prevents the whole t-shirt from being dyed. The process is easier to achieve with a wet t-shirt rather than a dry one.

Slogan T Shirts

The slogan t-shirt boom began in the 80s, and is just as popular, if not more so today. They are a great way to express a message, and some even call the people who wear them a human billboard. Back in the 80s the most iconic of these styles of t-shirts were the Frankie Say Relax t-shirts, and Choose Life. They were created by Katharine Hamnett who's style of oversized print is still used widely in the industry today. Slogan t shirts are used by everyone, from the man on the street to celebrities to companies. Many carry a statement or humorous message. The trend of funny t-shirts is popular in the land of celebrity, with people like Jessica Simpson being snapped in a "Real girls eat meat" tee, or a "Team Aniston" t-shirt, in support of Jennifer Aniston.
