1990 Was The Best Year...Ever!
How can we forget the 90's? Well, we can't, so we're going to take a look back at the best decade, year by year, and see which year was the best. We love all things retro, from music to film and games we used to play as a kid, so it always makes good memories to look back.
We're going to look at where it all started, 1990. So. Was 1990 the best year ever? Here's what happened.
The Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall went down on November 1989, but it will forever be remembered by many for David Hasselhoff singing on 31st December 1989 on New Year's Eve, catapulting himself in German folk law forever. It actually officially fell in 1990-92, but the falling will be remembered for the Hoff and singing for many. You can see the Hoff here in all his glory.
The World Cup - Italia '90
England went into the World Cup as no hopers, if the British media was to be believed. But England had talents like John Barnes, Chris Waddle, Gary Lineker and the most memorable character of them all, Gazza.
Paul Gascoigne lit up Italia '90, which will be remembered for England getting off to a shaky start, but progressing all the way to the Semi Final, losing to West Germany on the infamous penalty shoot out; With misses from Stuart Pearce and Waddle. How can we forget the Gazza tears too... "Have A Word With Him".
West Germany went on to win the World Cup, beating Argentina in the final, but perhaps one of the other big memories was the surprise of Cameroon, who got all the way to the quarter finals where they almost beat England, but went out.
New Order - World In Motion
We have to kick off the music with World In Motion, from New Order, or England New Order as they went by for this one track. It was the song for England for Italia 90, and was brilliant and still gets played today. The video was good, featuring all the players, and the song had the now legendary John Barnes rap in there too.

The Super Famicom Was Released
Nintendo Released the successor to the NES in Japan, the Super Famicom. This is in fact the Japanese version of the Super Nintendo, or SNES, which would come to the UK and Europe a few years later, so there was that to look forward to.
Elsewhere In Video Games
Elsewhere In Computers and video games, in the UK we were still loving the NES, it has battles with the Megadrive and the Master System from SEGA too, but there were no major console releases for us in these years. But with games like Alex Kidd on the SEGA, and the collection of Mario on the NES, we were quite happy with that.
1990 was quite a good year for films, and we seen some absolute classics which we still watch today.
Goodfellas is right up there with the most iconic films of all time, it constantly makes people's lists of best ever films, and that was released way back in 1990.
This is the year where it all started for Home Alone, which is still a Christmas tradition almost 30 years later.
How can we forget films like Edward Scissorhands and ghost, and it was the final part to Back To The Future in the trilogy.
Here's some more brilliant films which we were watching back in 1990.
- Pretty Woman
- Die Hard 2
- Kindergarten Cop
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Another 48 Hours
- Problem Child
- Look Who's Talking Too
- Three Men And A Little Lady
What a great year for TV! It doesn't matter if you were BBC, ITV or Channel 4, TV was gold back in 1990. We saw the best of some brilliant shows, and some brand new TV series which would run for a long time and live on in the memory.
A classic which went around the globe, Rowan Atkinson was MR Bean, and made it's debut in 1990. No catchy slogans or phrases needed, MR Bean was pretty much a silent character, and a funny one at that.
One Foot In The Grave
I Don't Believe It! That's one catchphrase which nobody will ever forget, and it made the show for One Foot In The Grave, starring Richard Wilson.
Harry Enfield And Chums
Also called Harry Enfield's Television Programme, Harry Enfield & Chums brought us laughter and so much humour in 1990. It was all about the characters, from Tim Nice But Dim to Smashy & Nicey and of course Kevin, who got his own film! Julio Geordio was another favourite, but frankly there were so many funny characters there's too many to name! This one clip sums up how good the show really was.

How can we forget sports? It was Liverpool who won Division 1 under King Kenny, West Germany won the World Cup as mentioned above. Milan beat Benfica 1-0 in the European Cup final, with Juventus winning the UEFA Cup and Sampdoria winning the Cup Winners Cup final. Absolute dominance from Italian clubs in European football.
It was also the year that Ayrton Senna won the drivers championship for the 2nd time, with McLaren, who took the constructors title in F1.
And that's our brief-but-not-so-brief look back at 1990, and what a fantastic year it was. Was it the best ever? We'll let you be the judge of that.
